The Equifax Breach - What Now?
September 28, 2017
As you have heard, Equifax suffered a massive data breach that may have compromised your personal data. You can check online to see if your files were affected by visiting www.equifaxsecurity2017.com
Steps you can take now to help protect your personal information:
- Sign up for free credit monitoring. (Equifax will provide this service for free if you enroll by November 21, 2017. The link above will provide further instruction.)
- Monitor your bank and credit accounts as frequently as possible for unusual activity.
- Request a fraud alert from the three major credit bureaus.
- Place a freeze on your credit information. This will require you to notify all three credit bureaus of your intent to freeze your account. The credit bureau will usually charge a nominal fee for this service. The downside to a credit freeze is that you have to “unlock” your account when applying for credit, then “lock” it again when the credit inquiry is complete.
Unfortunately these events will most likely continue and, as such, you must be vigilant when it comes to protecting your identity.
