Taxpayer Alert: Business Filing Scams Targeting California Businesses
November 23, 2009
Some California businesses have received fraudulent notices that appear to be official California business filing forms. These letters, from a Sacramento based company, are made to look like a government document, complete with an official looking seal and references to the Corporations Code and a "Reply By" date. The forms claim the business will be in danger of losing its corporate or limited liability status if payment is not made shortly. Fees requested range from $150 - $300.
Since 2004, the Attorney General's Office has received more than 5,000 complaints against those mailing these notices "...for the sole purpose of duping small business owners into paying them money - for no value in return," according to Attorney General Edmund G. Brown Jr.
If you are not sure about the validity of a form, do not pay and please contact us.
